Arroyo: Pope a source of strength despite illness

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said Saturday she continued to pray for Pope John Paul II, stressing the pontiff remained a lasting source of strength despite his ailing condition.

Arroyo, a devout Catholic, issued a statement saying she joined the rest of the nation in praying for the pope.

"Pope John Paul II has an enduring place in the heart of millions of the Filipino faithful for the special care and attention he has shown to us and it saddens us all to hear the news of his grave condition," the statement said.

"His serene courage and indomitable will remain a lasting source of our strength and hope as we face the trials and challenges of a troubled world,"

The Philippines is the only predominantly-Roman Catholic nation in Asia.
