TB spreads though Philippine army

A Philippines army doctor has confirmed figures for the high rate of tuberculosis infection in the army which were released by the Department of Health last week.

Over 200 new cases were recorded in the first six months of 2004, on top of about 800 cases last year.

Officials have expressed concern about the rate of infection among the military, particularly as soldiers often move around the country and could spread the disease.

Tuberculosis is the sixth leading cause of death in the Philippines.
