AFTER surviving an ambush and being trapped in Iraq, 10 Filipino drivers will no longer go back to Saudi Arabia where they are based and will instead return to the Philippines, the Department of Labor said Friday.

Acting Labor Secretary Manuel Imson said they "scuttled" the plan to bring back the drivers and their trucks overland to Saudi Arabia.

At the same time, Imson said instructions were given to labor officials in the area to collect all wages and benefits of the drivers -- including those for Angelo de la Cruz -- from their employers and exhaust all efforts to bring them back to the Philippines.

All 10 workers have agreed to return to the country and labor officials are asking the employers to pay for their airfare.
