Philippine army officer dies in southern clash

An army officer has been killed and three others wounded in a clash with a group of armed men, believed to be Abu Sayyaf rebels, on the southern Philippine island of Basilan.

The military says soldiers on routine patrol came under fire from the suspected Abu Sayyaf unit near the town of Sumisip.

A junior army officer leading the patrol was killed on the spot, while two soldiers and a pro-government militiaman were seriously wounded in the hour-long battle.
