Two shot dead after seizing control of Philippines airport

Police stormed Manila airport's control tower Saturday and shot dead a retired senior aviation official and an ex-navy officer, ending a pre-dawn siege staged in protest at alleged government corruption. Panfilo Villaruel, head of the Philippine Air Transport Office in the 1990s, was killed with former navy lieutenant Ricardo Gatchalian as aviation police regained control of the tower. The two men were strapped with explosives and armed with guns and grenades, security officials said. The attack came amid fears of a possible military coup. President Gloria Arroyo appeared on national television to allay the fears, saying the incident was not an attempt to grab power and that security was under control.
