Search on for best toilets

The Department of Tourism in cooperation with the Department of Health, Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Education, and Restroom Association of the Philippines, is launching the Toilet Recognition of the Year Awards 2003.

DOT Regional Director Edwin Trompeta said the national event highlights sanitation and personal hygiene awareness through the search for the best Philippine restrooms.

The search is open to owners and managers of public restrooms.

The nominee who meets the 100 points criteria of the Evaluation Checklist will automatically considered for the 3-star award. Additional 20 points will be given to the restrooms which meet the "More than the Usual" provisions. Restrooms which garner a total score of 106 to 113 points will receive a 4-star award. Restrooms with 114 to 120 points will be given a 5-star award.

Five-star awardees are the WOW best public restrooms which meet all the design, quality and maintenance criteria set by the National Committee, a press release from the capitol said.

The Regional Audit Team, composed of representatives from the DOT, DILG, DOH, DOTC, DepEd and tourism-oriented NGOs may then schedule unannounced visits to the restrooms to validate the entries. The Audit Team may visit non-nominated toilets and opt to evaluate them.

Nominees for 4 and 5-star awards shall be validated by representatives duly appointed by the DOT National Search Committee.

Nominations may be submitted to DOT Regional Office in Iloilo City on or before Nov. 15. For further information, those interested may call telephone no. (033) 337-5411 and look for Helen Camarista.
