Philippines sends peacekeepers to Liberia

A CONTINGENT of 145 Philippine soldiers has departed for Liberia to take part in peacekeeping operations in that country, the military said Sunday.

The contingent departed on a chartered flight on Saturday and will serve in the headquarters of the United Nations (UN) Mission in Liberia in administrative, postal, medical, transport and other non-combat positions, the military statement said.

This dispatch of Filipino troops is part of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's commitment to the UN General Assembly in September.

There are already 178 Filipinos taking part in peacekeeping operations in Iraq and this number will be increased to about 500 later, government officials have said.
