Bus plunge kills nine in Manila

MANILA (Reuters) - Nine people have been killed after the brakes of a minibus failed and it plunged 30 metres (100 feet) into a hole on a construction site in the Philippine capital, Manila, police say.

The driver, among those killed in the late Saturday crash, tried to stop his runaway vehicle by slamming it against a wall, unaware it was a flimsy wooden partition separating the road from the pit, dug for the foundations of a building, police said.

The passengers were on their way home from a religious meeting to commemorate All Saints Day in the mainly Roman Catholic country. Five passengers survived but were injured.
