Sandiganbayan inspects Erapís cell in Tanay

The Sandiganbayan on Monday conducted an ocular inspection of the detention cell of jailed ex-president Joseph Estrada at Camp Capinpin in Tanay, Rizal.

Sandiganbayan Justice Edilberto Sandoval said the inspection was done to determine if the facilities of the camp were sufficient for the former leader.

Sandoval, anti-graft court spokesman Renato Bocar and Sheriff Edgardo Urieta led the inspection. Assistant Ombudsman Dennis Villaignacio of the prosecution panel and defense lawyers Alan Paguia and Manuel Pamaran joined the inspection.

Villaignacio said the facility was not ideal for Estrada because he could easily sneak past the barbed wire fence surrounding the bungalow-type house.

Estrada spokesman Raymond Fortun, however, said the defense team would leave the decision where to detain the deposed leader to the Sandiganbayan.

Police transferred Estrada from Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City to Camp Capinpin last week, citing security threats against him.
