Philippine army: militant killed

The Philippine military says it has killed an Indonesian militant who had been on the run since escaping in July.

The army said Fathur Rohman al-Ghozi was killed in a gun battle on the southern island of Mindanao.

Al-Ghozi escaped from the national police headquarters in the Philippine capital, Manila.

He had admitted belonging to Jemaah Islamiah, a regional guerrilla group suspected of having strong ties to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.

The announcement comes six days before US President George W Bush visits Manila.

Security had been tightened ahead of Mr Bush's visit.
