Robber shoots girl to grab sales cash

CEBU -- A cell phone shop salesgirl is in critical condition in a Cebu City hospital after a jeepney robber shot her for fighting for a paper bag containing an undetermined amount of cash Thursday night.

Maria Theresa Bago, 21, an employee of Cebu Lim Telcard Enterprises, was shot in the neck, with the bullet exiting through her back.

PO3 Gemilo Veraque of the Theft and Robbery Section (TRS) said Bago is in a coma in the Perpetual Succour Hospital.

The bullet that hit Bago also grazed the chest of Danilo Joven, 28, who was sitting beside her in the jeepney bound for Talamban.

A teenager was also shot in the back by unidentified robbers aboard a Talamban-bound jeepney last September 27. Antonio Jakosalem, 19, was taken to the hospital but he lost his cellular phone worth P4,000 to the robbers.

TRS operatives said the robbery, which took place 6:55 p.m. last Thursday, seemed to have been planned because witnesses recalled that the robber followed Bago in boarding the jeepney along Leon Kilat St., Cebu City.

After he grabbed Bago's bag and shot her, the culprit boarded a waiting motorcycle near the Veco office in Gen. Maxilom Ave. and sped off towards M.J. Cuenco Ave.

Aside from the cash, the bag contained several call cards and a Nokia 3388 Buddy cell phone.

Just before they were supposed to turn to an access road leading to the Cebu Business Park from Gen. Maxilom Ave., the man, believed to be in his 30s, poked a handgun at Bago.

When the man grabbed the paper bag from Bago, she resisted and pulled it away from the man.

This prompted him to fire the gun he was poking at her and jump off the vehicle with the paper bag.

PO3 Veraque said that Bago was supposed to bring the bag of cash and call cards to her employer on Echavez St., which was probably why she fought for it.

Seeing his two passengers wounded, jeepney driver Alfredo Sambilad, 30, drove straight towards the Perpetual Succour Hospital.

Fellow passengers Jonathan Tundag, 20, and Annalisa Monte, 23, were unharmed.

The robber was described to be 5'4", of medium build and had a dark complexion.

He was wearing a pair of denim pants and fatigue jacket. MEA
