More cops in Manila shopping areas this Christmas

WITH the expected increase of holiday shoppers in Manila this coming Christmas season, Mayor Lito Atienza on Wednesday issued fresh directives to the Western Police District to increase police visibility in the city to protect buyers from criminals.

Atienza issued the order to preempt the anticipated rise in criminal activities whenever the Christmas season comes. He told the WPD director, Chief Supt. Pedro Bulaong, to order his men to patrol commercial shopping areas in Manila.

“The best deterrent against criminal elements who may victimize shoppers is still a highly visible and vigilant police presence. Criminals would think twice about operating in shopping areas if they know there is a high probability that they would be caught,” Atienza said.

Manila has seven shopping malls and other commercial areas located in Escolta, Rizal Avenue (known simply as Avenida), Carriedo, Binondo and Divisoria, which, the mayor noted, all experience heavy human traffic during the holiday season.

“This is one contest where we would like to lose,” Atienza said.

He also noted that with the soon-to-open shopping haven along Rizal Avenue, Atienza expects more shoppers to come to Manila.

The city government is currently renovating part of Avenida, eyeing the area to become another shopping destination. It will be opened in time for Christmas.
