White House confirms Bush Manila visit

MANILA - The White House confirmed Thursday that US President George W. Bush will visit the Philippines on Oct. 18 as previously announced.

The confirmation was coursed through the US Embassy in Manila which also announced Bush's travel plans to Asia from Oct. 17-23.

Preparations for the Manila visit by the US president, including security have been in full swing the past few weeks.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will hold talks with Bush on matters concerning bilateral issues.

Although Bush will be in Manila for only eight hours, the Arroyo government has made extensive preparations to ensure a fruitful visit.

From Manila, Mr. Bush will proceed to Thailand where he will also make a visit from Oct. 18-19 before attending the 11th Asia-Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) to be held in Bangkok.

Mr. Bush's first Asian stop will be in Japan where he has accepted an invitation extended by Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi to visit Tokyo on Oct. 17-18.

After attending the APEC summit, Mr. Bush will visit Singapore on Oct. 21-22 before visiting Indonesiaon Oct. 22.

He will also visit Indonesia on Oct. 22.

Mr. Bush will conclude his Asian tour with a visit to Australia on Oct. 22-23.

The White House said the Mr. Bush looks forward to his discussions with leaders of these countries "on important bilateral, regional, and global issues." (PNA)
