Bush to extend Asia trip

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. President George W. Bush is to extend his trip to South East Asia by taking in other countries in the region as well as Japan and Australia.

Bush was set to visit Thailand and the Philippines next week, but will now also visit Japan, Singapore, Indonesia and Australia, the White House announced Wednesday.

White House Press Secretary Scott McClellen said the president looks forward to discussions with leaders on "important bilateral, regional and global issues."

The president will leave for Japan on October 15 for a two-day visit at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

He will visit the Philippines on October 18, then fly to Bangkok, Thailand, for the annual meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders.

Bush will visit Singapore between October 21 and 22, Indonesia October 22 and Australia between October 22 and 23.
