Bataan accident claims 10 lives

At least 10 people were killed and about 60 others were injured when two minibuses, apparently racing to pick up passengers, collided in a town in Bataan on Saturday, police said.

Police investigators reported that one bus slammed into the rear of another it was trying to overtake, throwing the second vehicle off the side of the road, where it rolled over three times, said Senior Police Officer 1 Vic Parente of the Mariveles police. At least four people were killed.

Losing control after the collision, the first bus then crossed over to the opposite side of the road and plowed into a crowd at a bus stop, demolishing the waiting shed and killing the driver and at least five other people, Parente said.

Witnesses reported seeing the minibuses racing each other to get as many passengers as they could during the early morning rush hour.

Most of the passengers were workers at a local industrial estate, Parente said.

He said some of those injured were in critical condition.

A week earlier, 14 people were killed and 31 others were injured when a passenger bus collided with another bus and a van before plunging into a ravine in Gattaran, Cagayan.
