5 killed in gold robbery in Philippines

MANILA Seven gunmen on Saturday opened fire at a van carrying mining employees and gold in the northern Philippines, killing at least five of the employees and escaping with 21 kilograms of gold, a military spokesman said Sunday.

Lt Col Daniel Lucero told reporters that the robbery took place around 5 p.m. in the town of Mankayan in Benguet Province, a mining province about 500 kilometers north of Manila. (Kyodo News)
