First SARS case in The Philippines

From correspondents in Manila

THE Philippines reported its first "probable" case of severe acute respiratory syndrome today but said the victim has recovered and does not appear to have infected anyone else.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said the 64-year-old foreigner frequently travels between Manila and Hong Kong and sought treatment immediately after his symptoms started.

"Our authorities quarantined him and traced people who he had contact with and diagnosed them," Arroyo said.

"Thankfully, after treatment, the patient recovered and is now fully cured. None of the people he had contact with had shown signs of any sickness."

Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit said the patient, who was not identified by name, no longer had fever, adding: "We are going to make sure he is really cured."
